Designer Jason Wu told PEOPLE about his new "exquisitely designed" cat product series created for Cat Person

Jason Wu designed clothes for Michelle Obama, was nominated for a CFDA award and created his own beauty series, but his latest release is a whole new field for this designer.

Wu Zheng, 39, has collaborated with Maoren to create his own product line. This is a very reasonable decision for someone who has been called "resident catwoman" by friends for many years.

"I always regret that cat care products don't have really beautiful but effective solutions," he tells people. "It's always behind every pet store. So I always thought that one day I would make it myself. I've been saying that for years."

When Maoren contacted Wu to create a series for his brand, he said it sounded like a "great opportunity" to design his "dream series." The cat owner himself-he is the father of Jinxy and Peaches-Wu said his pet inspired his collection, which includes a stylish litter box, a stylish cat food bowl, a metal spoon, a catnip toy and A black hoodie.

"They are two girls, very picky. They actually never really found a litter box they like," Wu explained when talking about his pets. "Sometimes I have to get two, sometimes one is enough, but then they don't like it.... As a long-term cat lover, I have a lot of experience with them."

Wu said that his cats “always like the better things in life” and added that when designing his collection, he kept in mind their “picky taste” for “exquisite and sophisticated” products.

Although Wu said that most cat products look "obtrusive" or "childish", he wants to bring "form and function" to his Cat Person collection. The designer explained: "I think this is something we haven't seen in the cat care industry at all."

Thanks to Jinxy and Peaches, all the items in Wu's cat man series have been recognized by kitty. The fashion star told people that he used his notoriously fussy pet as a tester for everything, including his favorite series of products, the Skylight Litter Box.

"Any prototype, I will try it on them first to see if they have used it.... For them, being able to share a trash can is a big deal," he said. "So it was really a testing ground. Really, the cat finally came up with a really effective method."

He is also proud of Hideaway Scoop, Wu said that this metal and wooden spoon is "durable, long lasting" and "attractive." Of course, he has a special connection with Jason Catnip Pounce Toy. He is named after himself, shaped like a dog, "winking jokingly at the relationship between cats and dogs."

"I think it's fun to make a cat toy in the shape of a dog, and my zodiac sign is a dog," he said. "So, there are a lot of personal elements and anecdotes in designing that toy."

Wu admits that there is a difference between designing for cats and designing for people—that is, demographic differences—but in the end, he says that everyone is looking for the same things.

"The common ground is actually about aesthetics," he said. "I think our cat deserves something beautifully designed, just like we want."
